Symbols

There were many symbols that were well known during the Holocaust. These symbols represent different aspects of this terrible occurrance. Whether favorable or detrimental, these symbols will never be forgotten.

  • One of the symbols of the Holocaust was the Yellow Badge that the Nazis forced all Jews to wear on a daily basis. The purpose of forcing Jews to wear this badge was in part to shame Jews of their religion. This badge symbolizes the pride of Jewish people throughout the Holocaust. They were able to wear this badge without shame, and as the world seemed to collapse before their eyes, they still did not give up what they believed in.  This is a true example of the theme of heroism that the Jews possessed.

  • Another symbol from the Holocaust is broken glass. This broken glass occurred as a result from Kristallnacht, which means the "night of broken glass". On this night, Nazis destroyed Jewish temples, shops, and houses, in one of the worst Pogroms in history. Shattered glass from Jewish buildings lined the streets of Germany following the event. The broken glass from this symbolizes how the Nazis shattered the hopes of Jewish people: they took away their rights, stripped them of their possessions, and took away every chance they had to become successful.  The theme from this symbol is the hope that the Jews tried to maintain despite their challenges.

  • A third symbol is the barbed wire that lined the concentration camps. The barbed war kept the Jews from escaping the camps, along with the guards. This barbed wire portrays how hopeless of a situation the Jews were; they were trapped (as in the concentration camps) in a world of blame. The theme that this develops is that in the imperfect world that we live in, there always seems to be a scapegoat. In this case, the Jews are the scapegoats, blamed by Hitler and the Aryans for every problem that arose in Germany. However, just because there are scapegoats does not mean that there should be. The Jews were innocent and should not have been in this situation in the first place.

  • The swastika was used during the Holocaust by the Aryans, or the non-Jewish. It was the symbol of the Nazi Party, and it represents the death, hate, murder, violence, and anti-semitism that raged throughout Europe. It reflects the overall inhumane and barbaric actions that the Nazis took to gain power. This portrays the theme of power struggle: the Nazis would do ANYTHING to gain sentiment, including lie, murder, and more.
