Parallel Journeys and the Holocaust
Parallel Journeys is a nonfiction book about the Holocaust that contains many primary sources. These primary sources include personal testimonies from Alfons Heck, a former Hitler Youth, and Helen Waterford,  a Jewish victim. Both Heck and Waterford have very different approaches to the Holocaust.  The entries from Heck and Waterford truly describe the occurrences and beliefs that engulfed the people of Europe at the time.

Alfons Heck describes how "eight million German children were brainwashed and swept up by the Third Reich to become fanatic followers of Adolf Hitler." The children he are referring to are the Hitler Youth. Most of these children were unaware of the genocide of the Jewish people. He claims that this happened because Germans "simply did not care enough for other people. [They] didn't care about anything else except [themselves]."

Helen Waterford tells the stories of most of the survivors of the Holocaust. "The horror of the past was so great, it seemed impossible to build a new life. 'We survived,' said one Czechoslovakian immigrant, 'but our lives were destroyed. Though we look like you, we can never be like you...And we go to funerals and cry for the ones who were never buried.'"
